How the asset finance calculation works

The amount financed is the asset cost less your deposit. The calculator then estimates repayments using the chosen rate basis and term. An optional balloon or final payment reduces the regular monthly repayment but leaves more to pay at the end.

Use consistent VAT figures

Enter the asset price and deposit on the same VAT basis. VAT treatment and payment timing can differ between hire purchase, finance lease and other facilities, so your supplier and lender documents remain the authoritative figures.

Check the complete cost

Compare the deposit, monthly repayments, final payment, fees and total amount paid. Also check ownership, maintenance responsibilities and early settlement terms before accepting a facility.

Protect working capital

Paying cash may avoid interest, but it can remove money needed for wages, stock, tax and unexpected repairs. Compare the finance cost with the commercial benefit of keeping cash available and putting the asset into use sooner.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Financing a £75,000 commercial asset

This illustration uses a £7,500 deposit, a £10,000 final payment, a 60-month term, an 8.9% annual reducing-balance rate and £500 of entered fees.

Asset purchase cost
£75,000
Deposit
£7,500
Amount financed
£67,500
Estimated monthly repayment
£1,265
Final payment
£10,000
Estimated total finance cost
£18,899

A final payment reduces the monthly commitment but leaves a material amount to settle at the end. Compare that risk with a structure that repays more capital each month.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions business owners ask before applying

What can a business use asset finance for?

Asset finance can support vehicles, machinery, construction plant, manufacturing equipment, technology and other identifiable business assets. The asset, supplier, age and condition can affect which lenders and structures are available.

How much deposit is normally required?

Deposit requirements vary by lender, asset and applicant. Some facilities may require a VAT payment or contribution upfront, while others may fund a larger proportion of the purchase. Use the calculator to test more than one deposit level.

What is a balloon or final payment?

It is an amount left until the end of the agreement. It can reduce regular monthly repayments but increases the remaining commitment at the end. Check how it is calculated and what happens if the asset is worth less than expected.

Should I enter the asset price including VAT?

Use a consistent VAT basis for the price and deposit. VAT treatment and payment timing depend on the facility and the business's tax position. Confirm the final treatment with the lender, supplier and accountant.

Who owns the asset during the agreement?

Ownership depends on whether the facility is hire purchase, finance lease or another structure. Do not assume ownership transfers automatically. Check the lender documents, purchase option and any final fees before proceeding.
